AI Basics Beginner
Claude is the AI helper, Claude Desktop is the app on your computer, and Claude Code is the version for coding jobs.
Claude, Claude Desktop, and Claude Code are all the same helpful AI, used in different ways. Let's find out the difference!
What is Claude? Claude is an AI helper you can chat with. It answers questions, explains ideas, helps you write, and helps you think.
What is Claude Desktop? Claude Desktop is the Claude app for your computer. It's a way to use Claude right from your desktop, instead of a web browser.
What is Claude Code? Claude Code is a coding helper for people building software. It helps with code, files, commands, and programming tasks.
Think of it like this. Claude is the brain and helper. Claude Desktop is one place you can talk to Claude on your computer. Claude Code is the version used to help with coding jobs. Claude plus the desktop app plus the coding version, all the same helper.
When would you use each one? Use Claude to ask questions or get ideas. Use Claude Desktop when you want the app on your computer. Use Claude Code when you're working on a programming project.
Here's an example. You might say, "Claude, explain volcanoes!" Or, "Claude Desktop, help me on my computer!" Or, "Claude Code, help fix my Python bug!"
Remember: Claude is the AI helper, Claude Desktop is the computer app, and Claude Code is the coding helper. You've got this!
Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant. The same assistant shows up in different forms: Claude (the helper itself, used in a web browser or via chat), Claude Desktop (a dedicated app that runs Claude on your computer instead of a browser tab), and Claude Code (a version built for software engineering — reading and writing code, running commands, working with files in a project). One underlying assistant, three ways to reach it depending on what you're doing.
