AI & Me Beginner

When Should I Talk to a Human?

AI is fine for facts and ideas, but some things need a real person: big feelings, feeling unsafe, or a secret that feels heavy.

AI is a great helper for a lot of things β€” facts, ideas, homework hints, silly stories. But some moments are too important for a chatbot. For those, the smartest thing you can do is close the chat and talk to a real human.

Why a human? Because a person can truly care, really understand, and actually help β€” call someone, give you a hug, keep you safe. An AI can only make caring-sounding words. For the big stuff, that's not enough.

Talk to a trusted human when:

  • You have big feelings β€” you're really sad, scared, angry, or worried.
  • Something feels unsafe β€” for you or someone else.
  • Someone is being cruel to you, online or off.
  • A secret feels heavy β€” especially if someone said "don't tell your parents."
  • You just need a real person β€” that feeling counts, too.

Who counts as a trusted human? A parent, a grandparent, a teacher, a school counselor, a coach β€” a grown-up who helps you feel safe. It helps to know two or three before you ever need them.

A chatbot might even say "talk to someone." Good AI will sometimes tell you to reach out to a trusted adult or a helpline. That's your cue β€” listen to it, and go find your person.

Remember: AI is fine for facts, but real feelings and real safety need real people. Asking a human for help is never weak β€” it's the bravest, smartest move there is. Be curious, not careless!

What to remember

  • AI is good for facts and ideas β€” not big feelings.
  • Feeling unsafe or scared? Tell a real person.
  • A secret that feels heavy belongs with a trusted grown-up.
  • Asking a human for help is always a strong move.

Explain it back

You understand something best when you can teach it. Finish these out loud β€” to a friend, a grown-up, a little brother or sister, or even the mirror:

  • AI is helpful for…
  • But I should talk to a human when…
  • One trusted human I can go to is…
