AI & Me Beginner
An AI only knows what you type β but it keeps it. A good rule: if you wouldn't tell a stranger, don't type it to an AI.
When you chat with an AI, it can feel private β like it's just you and the robot. So it's fair to ask: what does the AI actually know about me?
The simple answer. An AI knows only what you tell it. It can't see you, find your house, or read your mind. But here's the catch: whatever you type, it keeps. Your messages are usually sent to the company that runs the AI and stored on their computers, where people or other programs might use them to make the AI better.
So it's not a secret-keeper. Typing something to a chatbot isn't like whispering to a best friend who forgets. It's more like writing it down somewhere you can't take it back. That's fine for "explain photosynthesis" β but not for private things.
The golden rule. Before you type something, ask: would I say this to a stranger? If not, keep it out of the chat. That includes your full name, address, school, phone number, passwords, and private worries.
You can still get help. You don't need to give personal info to use AI. Instead of "My name is ___ and I live at ___," just ask your question. The AI can help you all the same.
Green, yellow, red.
Remember: the AI keeps what you type, so keep private things private. If you wouldn't tell a stranger, don't tell the chatbot. Be curious, not careless!
Every tap changes something. The trick isn't fear β it's noticing. After you say βyes,β ask: what just changed?
You understand something best when you can teach it. Finish these out loud β to a friend, a grown-up, a little brother or sister, or even the mirror:
