An operating system, or OS, is the main software that helps a computer, phone, or tablet run. It helps apps work, manages files, and lets you use the device. The OS is like the helper in charge!

How does it work? You tap or click, the OS organizes the jobs, and the device does the task. The OS helps the screen, keyboard or touch, memory, files, and apps all work together.

What does it do? It runs apps and programs, manages files and folders, talks to the hardware (screen, speaker, Wi-Fi), helps devices connect to the internet and other devices, and shows menus, buttons, windows, and settings. Apps need the OS to work!

What can go wrong? A few common problems can make devices slow, buggy, or less safe: old software, too many windows open, glitches and errors, low storage, and unsafe downloads. The OS can only do so much if it's overworked or not cared for.

How do we stay safe? Keep the OS updated, use trusted apps from safe places, watch permissions, save your work often, and ask a trusted adult for help if something looks strange.

Here is a real example. Different devices use different operating systems, Windows and Linux on computers, macOS on Apple computers, Android on phones and tablets, and iOS on iPhones and iPads. They all help your device work and give you a great experience.

Remember: the operating system is the boss helper software that runs your device, it talks to the hardware, it manages apps, and it helps everything work for you.

For grown-ups

An operating system (OS) manages a device's hardware and resources, CPU, memory, storage, I/O, and provides the platform and services that apps run on. Examples: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS. Keeping it patched is core to security, since the OS mediates everything.
